How the numbers are sourced

Companies

Market valuations

Market capitalizations are pulled from public market data and refreshed once per day after the US market close. Companies listed outside US exchanges are tracked from their primary listing.

People

Individual net worth

Personal fortunes are estimates drawn from published wealth indices. Much of this wealth sits in privately held companies, so figures are approximate and revised as new valuations emerge.

The threshold

The single line

One trillion dollars is the one mark this site is built around. A company crosses it on paper through its share price. A person crosses it the same way, through the rising value of what they own.
